Five Star Show Choir
What is Five Star?
Five Star is an auditioned advanced mixed show choir which combines singing with intricate choreography to create high-energy, multi-song performances. Five Star performs at EMS Choir concerts, regional invitationals, and a national competition in California. This ensemble is often used for extra performances that promote the EMS Choir program such as the Elementary School Tour as well as caroling in Nob Hill. Five Star has a history of being a high-performing middle school show choir locally and out-of-state because of its hard working students with a wide variety of talents. If you have never seen Five Star perform, please visit our Instagram (ems_choirs) to see what their performances look like during competition season. In the past we won best in show at Volcano Vista’s Red Tail Rally and 1st place at the Light Up the Stage Show Choir competition in Burbank, California. If you have any questions about Five Star, please email the EMS Choir Booster Five Star VP at [email protected]. |

Who gets to be in Five Star?
All rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade EMS students are welcome to audition, however admittance into this ensemble is highly competitive. Five Star is an ensemble of 30-40 students. All Five Star members are required to be enrolled in an EMS Music Department curricular course (i.e., choir, band, or orchestra.)
How much time is involved?
This ensemble is an Enrichment class during the school day as well as an extra-curricular activity. Students rehearse before school two mornings a week (Tues. & Thurs., 7:00-8:10 am). There are additional full-day practices we call "Intensives" one Saturday a month. Five Star performs at many concerts, performances, and competitions throughout the year. Please familiarize yourself with everything listed on the Five Star Events page. Being involved in Five Star requires a significant time commitment.
Is Five Star as physically demanding as a sport?
Yes! Dancing is hard work! Due to the rigorous activity required for Five Star students, we require a physical exam clearance from their primary physician prior to starting Five Star in August.
What does it cost to participate?
This year the Five Star class fee is approximately $400. This fee goes towards the choreographer, music arranger, and costuming expenses. This fee will also cover students Five Star sweatshirts. Five Star students have the option to participate in the spring competition trip. There is an additional trip fee, which can be as much as $900. The Burbank trip fee is not included in the class fee. More information can be found on the Five Star Fees & Expenses page.
