Obtaining an APS Background Check
Volunteers and chaperones who are working with students must have a background check completed with APS.
General Information
There are two categories of volunteers at APS - Supervised and Unsupervised. If you will be with a teacher or APS employee at all times, then you can do the simpler Volunteer background check. If you think you will ever have unsupervised access to students as a volunteer or chaperone, then you will need to do the more extensive Unsupervised Volunteer background check which includes fingerprinting.
Supervised Volunteers
This is if you plan to help out at things like concerts. For a supervised background check, check out the process here. The cost is $12. You can apply on-line and it takes about 2 weeks to go through.
More Details From the APS Website: While encouraging parent participation, we must also consider the safety of every child in the district by requiring a background check from volunteers before participating in any volunteer activity at any APS school. APS background checks are valid for two years. The cost for a background check to become a supervised volunteer is $12.
Unsupervised Volunteers
This is if you plan to help on chaperoning on a trip or field trip. The cost is $46. You will need to contact EMS Principal, Jonathan Sais, at [email protected] and provide him with the following information that will be shared with APS school police to start your application process.
More Details From the APS Website
All volunteers who will have unsupervised access to students at any point and for any length of time and/or work in out of school time programs, are considered unsupervised volunteers and are required to have a full fingerprint background clearance and obtain an APS ID badge. Volunteers with an APS fingerprint clearance should wear their badge at all times they are volunteering. To complete your background check, you'll need to get fingerprinted at the APS Police City Center office. The cost for fingerprinting to become an unsupervised volunteer is $46.
