Five Star Hiatus Memo
To: All Five Star students and families
From: William Gonzales
Date: Monday, October 19, 2020
Dear Five Star Parents/Guardians,
Over these first 9 weeks of school, Five Star has been going strong: students have been consistent with attending virtual morning rehearsals and working to improve their vocal and dance performance skills. Rehearsals with our new choreographers, Gabbi and Stephan, have been highly engaging, educational, and fun. It has honestly been inspiring to see these students take on this challenge and continue to work for this ensemble in this new educational environment.
However, while I am very pleased with the work and progress of Five Star thus far in this unique year, I am planning to put morning rehearsals with the ensemble on hiatus in November and December due to a funding issue regarding my stipend for teaching the group.
My Five Star stipend is paid through the Community School Initiative (CSI) grant which is funded by the ABC Community School Partnership. Partners include Bernalillo County, the City of Albuquerque, APS, United Way of Central NM, and the Albuquerque Business Education Compact. I recently received news that the CSI grant funds would not be issued to schools while we are in remote learning.
As of right now, I plan to continue morning rehearsals through October. Starting November 2, Five Star will be on hiatus until January when we hope to have this funding issue resolved.
I am very sad to announce this to the kids and community today and please know that this does not mean that Five Star is cancelled. I look forward to resuming the ensemble as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Best,
Wil
